Square Enix has officially announced that the long-anticipated HD-2D remake of the original Dragon Quest and its sequel will launch globally on October 30, 2025. The remastered collection, titled Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.

The game follows the critically praised HD-2D visual style pioneered by Octopath Traveler and refined in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. This aesthetic blends pixel-art sprites with richly detailed 3D environments and modern lighting effects, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience for fans.

The announcement trailer showcases reimagined scenes from both games, dynamic turn-based combat, and an orchestral score. Notably, it also teases the presence of a new character, possibly altering the familiar storylines with added content or perspectives.

In addition to graphical enhancements, players can expect quality-of-life improvements including battle speed options, difficulty settings, and streamlined menus. These changes aim to make the games more accessible to newcomers while still preserving the core experience long-time fans remember.

Introduction of a New Character

A mysterious new character makes a brief appearance at the end of the trailer, sparking speculation among fans. Some believe this could be the Princess of Cannock, potentially becoming a playable character in Dragon Quest II. In the original game, she was an NPC, so her inclusion as a party member would be a significant addition.

The release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is part of Square Enix’s broader effort to celebrate the series’ legacy, as the franchise nears its 40th anniversary. With Dragon Quest III already receiving an HD-2D remake, this new release serves to unify the trilogy under a cohesive visual and gameplay style.
