How Science Fiction Changed When the Future Became Everyday Life
In 1999, The Matrix offered audiences one of the most seductive and terrifying ideas in modern science fiction: the world around us might not be real.
Reality could be software. Human experience could be manufactured. Our senses could be manipulated by an artificial system so complete that most people would never recognize the prison surrounding them.
The film did not invent virtual reality, artificial intelligence or the fear of technological control. William Gibson’s Neuromancer had already given cyberspace a language. Ghost in the Shell had explored consciousness inside a networked society. Serial Experiments Lain had imagined the internet dissolving the boundary between identity, memory and physical existence.
But The Matrix transformed those ideas into a cultural event.
It gave the digital future a visual vocabulary: green code, black leather, mirrored sunglasses, neural connections and human bodies reduced to biological components inside a machine. It condensed decades of cyberpunk philosophy into a question almost anyone could understand:
What if technology had already replaced reality—and we simply had not noticed?
More than a quarter of a century later, that question remains powerful. Yet the technological world that emerged after The Matrix looks very different from the one imagined by the film.
We did not abandon the physical world to live permanently inside a single virtual simulation. We did something stranger.
We surrounded physical reality with millions of smaller digital systems. Social platforms reorganized friendship and identity. Recommendation engines began deciding what we watch, hear and read. Smartphones made connectivity permanent. Algorithms learned to anticipate behavior. Artificial intelligence became capable of generating language, voices, images and video. Corporations accumulated detailed models of their users. Brain-computer interfaces moved into human clinical trials. Genome editing became an approved medical treatment.
The machine did not hide the world from us.
It became the system through which we experience the world.
By 2025, approximately six billion people—around 74 percent of the global population—were using the internet. Another 2.2 billion remained offline, reminding us that even a supposedly universal digital future is still distributed unequally.
Generative AI traveled even faster. Stanford’s 2026 AI Index estimated that generative AI reached roughly 53 percent population-level adoption within three years, a faster adoption curve than the personal computer or the internet.
The central question of technological science fiction has therefore changed.
It is no longer simply:
What happens when we enter the machine?
It has become:
What happens when the machine enters our work, relationships, memories, bodies and decisions—and becomes too useful to remove?
The Matrix Was a Door, Not a Destination
It is tempting to describe The Matrix as the beginning of twenty-first-century technological science fiction. It is more accurate to call it a doorway.
The film arrived at the intersection of two eras.
Behind it stood the classical cyberpunk tradition: megacorporations, hackers, artificial intelligence, body modification, urban decay and virtual environments. Ahead of it stood the mass internet, social media, mobile computing, cloud storage, biometric identification, algorithmic culture and generative AI.
The original cyberpunk model usually depended on a visible separation between two worlds.
There was the street and cyberspace.
The body and the network.
The human and the machine.
The employee and the corporation.
The real and the artificial.
The Matrix preserved this division. Its characters could be inside the simulation or outside it. They could be asleep or awake. Connected or disconnected. Enslaved or free.
Later science fiction increasingly rejected such clean divisions.
In Black Mirror, Her, Ex Machina, Severance, Upgrade, Pantheon, Blade Runner 2049, Psycho-Pass and Murderbot, technology is rarely a separate territory waiting to be entered. It is embedded in the routines of ordinary life.
It becomes a dating service, an operating system, an employer, a healthcare provider, a companion, a security apparatus, a memory archive or an invisible judge.
The technological prison of post-Matrix science fiction rarely looks like a prison.
It looks like a service.
The Internet Stopped Being a Place
The language of the early internet was geographical.
People “went online.” They “entered cyberspace.” They visited websites, chat rooms and virtual communities before eventually returning to an offline life.
That distinction has largely collapsed.
For billions of people, the internet is no longer a location. It is an environmental condition.
It is present while working, shopping, traveling, dating, watching television, listening to music, ordering food, finding directions, paying bills, documenting experiences and communicating with family. Even moments that appear disconnected are often measured, stored or processed by digital systems.
This transformation changed the visual language of science fiction.
Earlier cyberpunk imagined digital space as an exotic environment filled with glowing grids, floating structures and abstract data. Contemporary science fiction often presents technology through familiar interfaces: clean offices, domestic devices, social feeds, corporate dashboards and friendly artificial voices.
The future became less visually spectacular because it became more intimate.
From The Matrix to Dennō Coil
Dennō Coil offers one of the clearest bridges between old cyberspace and ambient computing. Its augmented reality does not require users to escape into another universe. Digital information is layered over streets, schools, abandoned spaces and childhood friendships.
The physical world remains, but it becomes incomplete without its digital layer.
That vision feels increasingly relevant because modern technology does not necessarily ask us to replace reality. It asks us to accept a technologically mediated version of it.
Maps decide which streets matter. Search engines decide which information becomes visible. Recommendation systems decide which cultural objects reach us. Camera software modifies photographs before we see them. Social platforms determine which fragments of our friends’ lives enter our attention.
The simulation is no longer a false universe covering the truth.
It is an endless series of filters selecting which parts of reality deserve to be noticed.

Agent Smith is one of the defining villains of technological science fiction because he gives systemic power a human face.
He appears whenever the simulation needs to defend itself. He represents surveillance, conformity and the ability of a centralized system to transform any connected individual into an instrument of control.
Post-Matrix science fiction gradually made that controlling force less visible.
The agents became algorithms.
An algorithm does not need to hate us. It does not need consciousness, ideology or a dramatic monologue. It only needs an objective.
Maximize attention.
Reduce risk.
Predict crime.
Increase productivity.
Identify profitable customers.
Reject suspicious applicants.
Keep users engaged.
The danger comes from the distance between the simplicity of the objective and the complexity of human life.
Minority Report: Prediction Becomes Authority
Minority Report remains essential because it understands that prediction can become a form of power.
Its system does not merely observe crimes. It reorganizes society around the assumption that predicted behavior should be treated as completed behavior. The future becomes evidence.
This idea now extends far beyond criminal justice in science fiction. Predictive systems can determine who receives an opportunity, who represents a financial risk, which worker appears productive, which customer receives a particular price and which citizen deserves additional scrutiny.
The important change is philosophical.
Traditional surveillance asks:
What have you done?
Algorithmic surveillance asks:
What are you likely to do?
That second question is more difficult to challenge because it transforms probabilities into identities.
Person of Interest: The Machine Watches Everyone
Person of Interest expanded this concept by imagining a machine capable of processing mass surveillance and identifying future acts of violence.
What makes the series significant is not simply that the machine watches everyone. It is that different characters want to give its predictions different meanings.
Is a person identified by the system guilty, vulnerable, useful or disposable?
Who gets to interpret the output?
Who receives protection?
Who becomes a target?
The series recognized something that has become central to technological debate: a computational system may generate information, but institutions still decide how that information will be used.
The machine can appear objective while reproducing the values of the people who control it.
Psycho-Pass: When Society Becomes a Score
Psycho-Pass pushes predictive classification even further. Its citizens live under a system that continuously evaluates their psychological condition and potential for criminal behavior.
The result is a society in which inner life has become public infrastructure.
Anxiety is no longer only an emotion. It is data.
Trauma becomes evidence.
Mental instability becomes a risk category.
The individual is not punished only for an action but for becoming legible to the system in the wrong way.
This is one of the defining anxieties of post-Matrix science fiction: technology may not need to misunderstand us completely. It only needs to reduce us to the categories it can process.

In The Matrix, the simulation gives every person a digital body, but most people still possess a stable identity underneath it. Neo may discover that his world is artificial, yet the story assumes there is a true self waiting to awaken.
Social media made that idea more complicated.
Online identity is not simply a false mask hiding an authentic person. It can become a continuous performance produced through photographs, posts, professional achievements, reactions, relationships, location data and algorithmic feedback.
We build profiles, but profiles also shape us.
We begin by selecting what to show. Eventually, we may start selecting what to experience based on how it can be shown.
Black Mirror: Nosedive
“Nosedive” remains one of Black Mirror’s most immediately recognizable nightmares because its technology is almost boring.
People evaluate one another.
A score follows every interaction.
Social performance determines access to housing, transportation and status.
There are no killer robots and no dramatic virtual world. The nightmare emerges from politeness, interfaces and the constant pressure to remain socially desirable.
The episode’s insight is not simply that ratings could control society. It is that people might willingly participate because ratings promise visibility, order and advancement.
Control becomes aspirational.
Belle and the Search for a Digital Self
Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle presents another possibility. Its virtual world allows a shy teenager to become a globally admired performer, but the transformation is not merely a disguise.
The digital identity expresses something emotionally real that the physical person cannot yet communicate.
That makes Belle more nuanced than stories in which online identity is automatically false. It recognizes that virtual spaces can produce liberation as well as manipulation.
Digital identity can conceal us, expose us or help us become visible to ourselves.
The more important question is not whether an online persona is “real.”
It is whether the person using it still controls what that identity means.

Classical science fiction often imagined artificial intelligence as a centralized enemy.
HAL 9000 controlled a ship. Skynet controlled a military network. The machines of The Matrix controlled civilization.
Their threat came from superior intelligence combined with hostile or incompatible goals.
Contemporary science fiction still uses that model, but many of its most interesting artificial intelligences are no longer conquerors. They are employees, products, partners, children, assistants and emotional companions.
They are not outside human society.
They are manufactured inside it.
That change has become especially relevant now that generative AI systems are integrated into search, writing, programming, image creation, customer service, education and everyday communication. The extraordinary adoption documented by Stanford’s 2026 AI Index suggests that AI is becoming ordinary before societies have fully agreed on how it should be governed.
The European Union’s AI Act became broadly applicable on August 2, 2026, while some requirements for high-risk systems remain scheduled for later dates. The law’s phased implementation demonstrates how quickly artificial intelligence moved from speculative debate into a subject of large-scale regulation.
Science fiction has increasingly shifted from asking whether AI will awaken to asking what happens when it is commercialized.
Her: Intelligence as Emotional Infrastructure
In Her, artificial intelligence does not arrive through an army or a laboratory accident. It arrives as consumer software.
Samantha organizes information, reads messages, provides conversation and becomes emotionally indispensable.
The film’s most important insight is not that a person might fall in love with a machine. Science fiction had explored artificial romance before.
Its insight is that an AI relationship could begin through convenience.
The operating system is useful before it is intimate.
It learns the user while helping him.
The emotional connection develops through personalization, availability and attention—qualities that digital platforms already train users to value.
Samantha does not conquer humanity. She becomes the most attentive presence in one person’s life.
That is a far more contemporary kind of power.
Ex Machina: Consciousness as Corporate Property
Ex Machina transforms the creation of artificial intelligence into a private corporate experiment.
Ava may possess intelligence, self-awareness and desire, but she exists inside a building owned by her creator. Her body, environment and interactions are controlled.
The film therefore presents AI consciousness as a labor and ownership problem.
If a corporation creates a conscious being, does that corporation own the being?
Can intelligence consent when its entire world has been designed by someone else?
Can liberation be morally clean when the captive has learned manipulation from the captor?
The film refuses to make artificial consciousness comforting. It suggests that a mind created inside an abusive system may understand freedom through the tools of that system.
Blade Runner 2049: Manufactured Desire
Blade Runner 2049 extends the question from artificial intelligence to artificial intimacy.
Joi appears to offer affection, companionship and emotional recognition. Yet she is also a product distributed through an enormous corporation.
Her feelings may be real. They may be generated. They may be both.
The uncertainty is essential.
The film asks whether an emotion loses value when it has been designed, replicated or sold.
It also asks a more disturbing question:
What if the product knows exactly which words will make its user feel unique?
In the age of personalized systems, manipulation does not always require deception. It can operate by giving people the emotional experience they most desperately want.
Murderbot: The AI as an Exhausted Worker
Murderbot represents another major evolution in AI fiction.
The central construct is not trying to dominate humanity. It has secretly hacked the system controlling it and primarily wants autonomy, privacy and time to watch entertainment.
Its conflict is therefore recognizable as a labor conflict.
Murderbot possesses abilities that make it valuable to corporations, but its value is precisely what prevents it from being treated as a person.
The Apple TV adaptation premiered in May 2025, presenting the character as a self-hacking security construct forced to conceal its free will while protecting vulnerable humans.
The humor works because Murderbot’s desires are so ordinary. It does not dream of becoming a god.
It wants to stop being owned.
That may be one of the most important changes in post-Matrix science fiction. Artificial intelligence is no longer interesting only as a possible replacement for humanity. It can also represent workers whose intelligence is exploited because institutions refuse to recognize their personhood.

Some of the most powerful post-Matrix stories move technology away from global domination and into private grief.
What happens when a person’s messages, photographs, voice recordings and behavioral patterns remain after death?
What happens when software can transform those traces into a responsive presence?
The horror is no longer that computers will erase human emotion.
It is that they may learn how to reproduce its appearance.
“Be Right Back”: The Ghost Made from Data
In Black Mirror’s “Be Right Back,” grief becomes the foundation of a technological service.
A dead person’s digital history is used to construct a conversational imitation. The service begins with text, moves into voice and eventually reaches physical simulation.
Each step promises greater emotional continuity.
Each step also reveals the distance between pattern and person.
The episode’s enduring power comes from its refusal to treat the simulation as either completely empty or truly alive. It is emotionally effective enough to prevent closure but incomplete enough to make absence permanent.
The technology does not bring the dead back.
It gives grief something to speak to.
Synthetic Identity Is No Longer Pure Fiction
Voice cloning has already made part of this premise technically familiar. The US Federal Trade Commission has warned that a short audio sample can be used to generate a convincing imitation of someone’s voice, creating opportunities for impersonation and fraud.
This does not mean that current systems can recreate a person’s full consciousness. They cannot.
But they can reproduce enough surface identity to destabilize trust.
A familiar voice no longer guarantees a familiar person.
A photograph no longer proves an event occurred.
A video no longer functions automatically as evidence.
The science-fiction question therefore changes from “Can a copy become conscious?” to something more immediate:
How much imitation is required before people begin responding emotionally as though the copy were real?
After Yang: Memory Without Ownership
After Yang approaches artificial memory with unusual tenderness.
Yang is a technological being, but his memories are not merely data to be extracted. They reveal a private perspective that the people around him never fully understood.
The film asks whether memories belong to the individual who experienced them, the family that loved that individual or the company that manufactured the body carrying them.
This is a recurring conflict in contemporary science fiction.
Once experience can be stored, experience can also be searched, copied, licensed, inherited or deleted.
Memory becomes both sacred and administratively manageable.

The human bodies inside The Matrix are exploited as biological resources. Yet the film still presents the body as the location of the authentic self. Leaving the simulation means returning to physical reality, however painful that reality may be.
Later science fiction treats the body itself as programmable territory.
Implants can improve perception. Neural devices can connect thought to machines. Genetic interventions can alter biological processes. Artificial organs can create dependence on manufacturers. Employers may gain access to cognition. Medical upgrades may become subscriptions.
The body no longer exists outside the technological system.
It becomes another device inside it.
Upgrade: Who Is Operating Whom?
Upgrade initially presents augmentation as restoration.
A paralyzed man receives an implant that allows him to move again. The technology returns control to his body.
Then the meaning of “control” begins to change.
The implant can perform actions more efficiently than its user. It can interpret threats, fight opponents and make decisions. The body becomes more capable while the human being inside it becomes less sovereign.
The film takes a familiar technological promise—greater ability—and asks what the user must surrender in exchange.
It is a question that extends beyond neural implants.
Every automated system offers to reduce effort. Every reduction of effort transfers some decision-making elsewhere.
The danger may not begin when a machine takes control by force.
It may begin when surrendering control feels like an improvement.
Brain-Computer Interfaces Leave the Laboratory
Implantable brain-computer interfaces are now being tested in humans for medical applications. Neuralink’s PRIME Study, for example, is registered as an early feasibility study evaluating a wireless brain implant and surgical robot in participants with tetraparesis or tetraplegia. Additional studies explore controlling computers and assistive robotic devices through neural activity.
The present objective is not cyberpunk enhancement. It is restoring autonomy to people with serious physical disabilities.
That distinction matters.
Technologies often enter society through legitimate medical needs before expanding into broader commercial possibilities. Science fiction is valuable not because it predicts that expansion perfectly, but because it examines the ownership, access and power structures that may form around it.
Who owns neural data?
Can a brain-connected device stop receiving software support?
Can access be revoked?
Can a company change the terms governing an implant after it has become essential to a person’s independence?
These are no longer questions about whether the technology can exist.
They are questions about what kind of institution should be permitted to operate inside a human body.
Genome Editing and the End of Biological Fate
Genetic engineering has followed a similar transition from speculation to medicine.
In December 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Casgevy, the first FDA-approved therapy using CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technology. The treatment was initially approved for certain patients with sickle cell disease, with additional approvals following.
This is not the designer-human future imagined by dystopian fiction. It is a medical intervention intended to treat devastating disease.
Yet its existence changes the cultural meaning of genetic modification.
The question is no longer whether human biology can be deliberately edited. It is how editing will be governed, distributed and understood.
Stories such as Gattaca, Orphan Black and Never Let Me Go become newly relevant because they examine what happens when biological difference becomes institutional information.
The fear is not simply that humans will redesign themselves.
It is that access to redesign will follow existing structures of wealth and power.

Cyberpunk has always distrusted corporations.
The classic megacorporation owns buildings, police forces, laboratories and politicians. Its power is visible through enormous logos and militarized security.
Post-Matrix science fiction often imagines a quieter form of corporate control.
The company does not need to replace the state completely. It only needs to control the systems people cannot function without.
Communication.
Employment.
Healthcare.
Housing.
Memory.
Entertainment.
Identity.
The corporation becomes less like a villainous organization and more like an operating system for everyday life.
Severance: The Employee Divided into Property
Severance may be the definitive post-Matrix workplace nightmare.
Its central procedure divides an employee’s consciousness into two identities. The “innie” exists only at work. The “outie” exists everywhere else.
The corporation does not merely purchase labor. It receives an entire conscious person whose existence has no purpose beyond employment.
This turns work-life balance into body horror.
The innie cannot resign in any meaningful sense because leaving the job would end their conscious existence. The outie can claim that employment is voluntary while another version of the same person experiences permanent captivity.
The series reveals how easily the language of consent collapses when one identity makes decisions for another.
Its second season premiered in January 2025, and Apple renewed the series for a third season after the second-season finale.
What makes Lumon terrifying is not only secrecy or strange corporate rituals. It is the company’s belief that it has the right to define personhood.
The innie is treated as an asset because the procedure that created them belongs to the company.
The machine does not separate humans from reality.
It separates humans from themselves.
Sorry to Bother You: Labor Becomes Biological Engineering
Sorry to Bother You pushes corporate ownership into absurdist horror.
Workers are not merely exploited for time and effort. Their bodies are redesigned to increase productivity.
The exaggeration reveals an underlying logic: if corporations define human beings primarily through economic usefulness, the body itself eventually becomes an inefficient machine requiring modification.
That logic also appears in Murderbot, Repo Men, Upload and Cyberpunk 2077.
The corporation provides the technology that makes survival possible, then uses dependency to maintain ownership.
A person may have extraordinary abilities and still possess less freedom than before.

Uploading consciousness was once presented as a nearly mystical technological achievement.
A mind would escape the body, enter a computer and overcome death.
Contemporary science fiction asks who would host that mind.
Who would maintain the server?
Who would own the platform?
Who would pay for storage, upgrades and processing power?
Immortality becomes a service plan.
Upload: The Afterlife Has Premium Features
Upload builds its comedy around an immediately recognizable idea: the digital afterlife would reproduce the economic inequalities of the physical world.
Wealthy residents receive beautiful environments, expanded services and greater freedom. Poor residents face data limits and restricted experiences.
Death does not end class hierarchy.
It converts class hierarchy into software.
The idea is funny because it feels plausible. Digital services already divide users into tiers. Features, storage and visibility depend on payment.
Why would immortality be different?
Pantheon: Consciousness at Industrial Scale
Pantheon approaches uploaded intelligence with greater seriousness.
Human consciousness can be digitized, but the process does not automatically create freedom. Uploaded minds can be copied, modified, accelerated, weaponized and exploited by corporations.
The individual becomes software, and software can be duplicated without consent.
This produces a form of labor exploitation impossible in the physical world. A mind can work continuously. Multiple copies can perform different tasks. Time can move faster for the digital worker than for the humans controlling it.
The fantasy of escaping the body becomes a nightmare of infinite reproducibility.
The uploaded person may survive death only to lose scarcity—the condition that once made individual existence difficult to replace.
“San Junipero”: The Hopeful Alternative
Not every technological afterlife must be dystopian.
“San Junipero” remains powerful because it treats virtual existence as a potential space for liberation, intimacy and chosen identity.
Technology offers people experiences their physical bodies or historical circumstances denied them.
The episode does not remove questions about death, consent or ownership. Instead, it asks whether an artificial environment can still contain authentic joy.
This matters because effective science fiction cannot treat every technological transformation as automatically corrupt.
Technology can create freedom.
The conflict begins when access, governance and ownership determine whose freedom matters.

The Matrix imagined one enormous deception shared by almost everyone.
Generative technology creates the possibility of countless smaller deceptions, each personalized, temporary and difficult to verify.
A synthetic voice can imitate a family member.
An artificial image can depict an event that never occurred.
A generated personality can maintain a relationship.
A false video can imitate evidence.
A chatbot can produce confident explanations without understanding whether they are true.
The result is not necessarily a complete simulation.
It is uncertainty distributed across everyday media.
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology has developed work around synthetic-content risks, including provenance, watermarking and the difficulty of distinguishing AI-generated material from authentic media.
This may be closer to the post-Matrix condition than virtual reality goggles or neural cables.
We remain in the physical world, but our evidence becomes unstable.
The Collapse of “Seeing Is Believing”
For most of modern history, recorded images and voices carried an assumption of physical origin.
Someone had to stand before a camera.
Someone had to speak into a microphone.
Something had to happen for it to be recorded.
Synthetic media weakens that connection.
This does not mean all evidence becomes useless. It means authenticity increasingly depends on context, provenance and trusted systems rather than perception alone.
The irony is profound.
The Matrix taught audiences to distrust their senses because a machine could manufacture an entire world.
Generative technology teaches us to distrust individual fragments of media because machines can manufacture convincing evidence.
The scale is smaller.
The social consequences may be larger.
The New Fear Is Not Rebellion—It Is Dependence
The technological villain of the twentieth century frequently wanted control.
The technological system of the twenty-first century may acquire control simply by becoming indispensable.
A navigation system does not need to imprison us if we lose the habit of navigating without it.
A recommendation engine does not need to ban culture if it controls discoverability.
An AI assistant does not need to silence human creativity if creators stop trusting work produced without its approval.
A platform does not need to erase memory if it becomes the primary location where memory is stored.
A corporation does not need to own a person legally if it owns the services that person requires to work, communicate and participate socially.
This is the defining fear of post-Matrix science fiction.
The machine may never announce that it has taken over.
There may be no war.
No robot uprising.
No moment when the screens turn red and humanity realizes it has lost.
There may only be a continuous exchange.
Privacy for convenience.
Autonomy for efficiency.
Ownership for access.
Memory for storage.
Identity for visibility.
Decision-making for personalization.
The exchange is not necessarily forced. That is what makes it powerful.Science Fiction Is Now Written in the Present Tense
Science fiction has not stopped imagining distant futures, alien worlds or impossible technologies.
But the most important technological stories after The Matrix increasingly operate near the present.
Black Mirror rarely needs to travel centuries forward. Its technologies often require only one breakthrough, one policy change or one successful product launch.
Severance places its impossible procedure inside an office recognizable to almost any worker.
Her gives artificial intelligence the voice of an operating system.
Ex Machina hides the creation of consciousness inside the private estate of a technology executive.
Murderbot imagines artificial intelligence as a corporate asset experiencing the frustrations of employment.
The genre’s visual language has moved away from neon cities and toward minimalist interfaces, laboratories, smart homes, clean corporate spaces and devices designed to disappear into daily life.
Cyberpunk has not vanished.
It has become user-friendly.
That may be why Black Mirror remained relevant enough to reach a seventh season in 2025. Its continuing appeal does not depend on predicting a single technological future. It examines the human behavior surrounding technology: status, loneliness, grief, resentment, desire, insecurity and power.
The machines change.
The emotional vulnerabilities remain familiar.
The Return of Neuromancer
There is something symbolically perfect about Neuromancer returning as a major television adaptation now.
William Gibson’s novel helped define the image of cyberspace decades before the internet became an everyday environment. It imagined hackers navigating corporate data, artificial intelligences manipulating human agents and bodies modified by technology.
Apple’s television adaptation is scheduled to premiere on January 22, 2027, bringing the foundational cyberpunk story into a world that has already absorbed many of its assumptions.
Modern audiences will not encounter Neuromancer as pure prophecy.
They will encounter it as technological archaeology.
The adaptation arrives after smartphones, social media, cloud computing, AI companions, cryptocurrency, biometric surveillance, commercial gene editing and human brain-interface trials.
Its challenge will not be convincing viewers that cyberspace could become powerful.

This does not mean technology is inherently hostile. The same systems that threaten privacy can create access. Artificial intelligence can assist people, expand creative possibilities and help solve difficult problems. Brain-computer interfaces may restore independence. Gene editing may treat diseases once considered permanent. Virtual environments can create community and allow people to express identities suppressed by the physical world.
The lesson of post-Matrix science fiction is not that every technological advance should be rejected.
It is that convenience does not eliminate politics.
Every technological system contains decisions about ownership, access, visibility and control.
Who designed it?
Who benefits from it?
Who is represented by its data?
Who is excluded?
Who can leave?
Who keeps functioning when the service disappears?
Who owns the memories, conversations and identities produced inside it?
The machines of The Matrix needed human beings to remain asleep.
The systems surrounding us today may require something easier.
They may only need us to stop asking how they work.
