The violent yuri action manga by Kana Yoshimura is getting its long-awaited anime adaptation, bringing a dangerous antihero, brutal crime stories, and an unconventional partnership to the screen in January 2027.

Some anime heroes save the world. Others operate somewhere between the law and complete madness. MURCIÉLAGO belongs firmly in the second category.

The upcoming TV anime has revealed a new teaser trailer, giving fans another look at the adaptation of Kana Yoshimura’s dark action manga. Produced by Satelight and Staple Entertainment, the series is scheduled to premiere in January 2027, bringing its mix of crime, violence, yuri themes, and morally questionable characters to television.

And at the center of it all is a protagonist who is anything but your typical anime heroine.

A Serial Killer Turned State-Sanctioned Executioner

MURCIÉLAGO follows Kuroko Koumori, a lesbian serial killer and former death-row inmate who receives an extraordinary second chance. Rather than facing execution herself, she is recruited by the state to serve as an officially sanctioned executioner, using her lethal abilities against dangerous criminals.

Her new position puts her on the front lines of some of society’s most disturbing crimes. But Kuroko isn’t exactly a conventional agent of justice. She is a dangerous, unpredictable woman whose own morality makes the line between hero and villain difficult to define.

Her partner is Hinako Tozakura, who serves as both her watchdog and companion. Despite her innocent appearance, Hinako possesses exceptional driving skills, making her an essential part of the duo’s operations.

Together, they take on one horrifying case after another, confronting the darkness lurking beneath the surface of society.

The central premise is simple: fight evil with evil. What makes MURCIÉLAGO interesting is just how far that idea can go when the person responsible for delivering justice is herself a deeply dangerous criminal.

Dark Action, Yuri, and an Unconventional Partnership

One of MURCIÉLAGO’s biggest draws is its combination of high-intensity action and yuri elements. The series places a lesbian protagonist at the center of a violent crime narrative, rather than treating her identity as a minor detail in an otherwise conventional story.

Kuroko is a character built around contradictions. She is both an instrument of the law and someone whose own actions challenge the idea of justice. Her relationship with Hinako adds another dimension to the story, bringing a distinctive dynamic to an already unconventional action duo.

The manga is also known for its extreme violence, mature themes, and provocative storytelling. This isn’t the kind of series that necessarily asks viewers to root for a spotless hero. Instead, it invites them into a world where the people fighting monsters might be just as frightening as the monsters themselves.

For fans of darker manga adaptations, crime thrillers, and action stories featuring morally complicated women, MURCIÉLAGO could be one to watch in 2027.

Satelight and Staple Entertainment Bring the Manga to Anime

The adaptation brings together two animation studios, Satelight and Staple Entertainment, with a creative team led by chief director Takashi Naoya and director Matsuo Asami.

Naoya is also responsible for series composition, while Kiyoshi Tateishi handles character designs. The soundtrack is composed by Masanori Akita and Yuichi Tsuchiya.

The anime is based on Kana Yoshimura’s manga, which has been serialized in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine since 2013. The long-running series has developed an international following, making this adaptation a notable moment for fans who have been waiting to see Kuroko and Hinako brought to life in animation.

HIDIVE has announced plans to stream the series in select international markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Availability in other territories will depend on regional distribution announcements.

Is MURCIÉLAGO Worth Keeping on Your Anime Watchlist?

If your anime tastes lean toward dark crime stories, chaotic antiheroes, brutal action, and relationships that don’t fit neatly into familiar genre formulas, MURCIÉLAGO deserves a place on your radar.

Its premise alone offers something different: a convicted serial killer given permission to hunt other criminals, with a partner whose skills make the whole operation possible. Add the manga’s mature tone and yuri elements, and the result is a series that stands apart from more conventional action anime.

The real question is how the adaptation will balance the source material’s extreme content with its character-driven storytelling. With the new trailer now available, fans have another reason to start paying attention.

MURCIÉLAGO premieres in January 2027. The hunt is about to begin, and this time, the executioner is just as dangerous as the criminals she’s chasing.
