Hack, Slash, and Laugh: The Golden Axe Animated Series Hits Paramount+ This September
SEGA’s Classic Brawler Golden Axe Is Returning as an Animated Comedy on Paramount+
If you spent any part of your childhood kicking little blue gnomes for magic potions or fighting over who got to ride the weird bird-lizard mount, get ready for a serious wave of nostalgia. SEGA’s iconic 1989 arcade classic, Golden Axe, is officially making the jump to television as a 10-episode animated series, landing on Paramount+ on September 16.
This isn’t taking itself too seriously, either. The project is led by Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!), who is pulling double duty as showrunner. Given that creative pedigree, expect high-energy fantasy violence mixed with the kind of meta, self-referential humor that lovingly pokes fun at side-scrolling tropes.
The story drops us back into the high-fantasy world of Yuria, where our classic trio—barbarian Ax Battler, fire-wielding amazon Tyris Flare, and the perpetually grumpy dwarf Gilius Thunderhead—are once again trying to stop the tyrannical Death Adder. The twist? They’re joined by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced, overly enthusiastic newcomer who feels like he wandered into a high-stakes hack-and-slash campaign by total accident.

The Voice Cast:
-
Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as Gilius Thunderhead
-
Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) as Ax Battler
-
Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty) as Tyris Flare
-
Danny Pudi (Community) as Hampton Squib
-
Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks) as Chronos “Evil” Lait (nods to Golden Axe III)
Produced by CBS Studios, Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film, the series is part of SEGA’s ongoing push to adapt its retro vault for new audiences. Whether you’re in it for the nostalgia or just want to see Danny Pudi voice a fantasy novitiate trying not to get cleaved by a battle axe, keep your calendar clear for September 16.
