Sony’s ‘Spartacus’ could be PlayStation’s answer to Xbox Game Pass
Spartacus is the codename of the new subscription service planned by PlayStation for PS4 and PS5.
The code name for this service so far, according to a Bloomberg report, is Spartacus. PS players already have PlayStation Plus, which gives you access to three games a month that you can install at any time, but that you can only play as long as you continue to pay for the service and only the games that you managed to get at the time that you subscribed. Also, the subscription gives you certain discounts on some titles from time to time.
The second is PlayStation Now, the cloud gaming service that will surely not sound familiar to you, and that is because it is only available in some countries for now. However, what Spartacus intends to do could put PS Now out of the game. While PS Plus will remain as a service for the players of this console, “Spartacus” will gradually displace PS Now, until they manage to remove it from the systems.
The most exciting thing about this announcement is the games because according to information from Bloomberg, Sony is planning to publish them at three different times. First, all the games that have passed through PS Plus. The second is a vast catalog of PS4 and eventually PS5 games, available to download and play.
And the third is the retro gaming integration of all of Sony’s previous platforms. Just as you dreamed it, PS, PS2, PS3, and even PS Vita games will reach a digital catalog that will allow you to play them with backward compatibility on your PlayStation 4 or 5. If this is true, it will be the best idea Sony has had since Dual Sense, and it will definitely gain you a lot of ground in the market.
There are still several details to be fine-tuned, according to Bloomberg, such as subscription fees, but the service is expected to go into effect sometime in the spring of 2022.
