Series Review: From Season 2 is disturbingly evil and very thought-provoking

2022 was a very interesting year in terms of series and films, the way of viewing these works has changed and continues to change and this has a lot to do with the platforms that have had the advantage over home formats.

One of the most interesting and impressive series presented during that year is undoubtedly FROM, which has captivated locals and strangers with its story, its concept of horror has turned the genre around by providing a new way of telling these stories.

It is normal and to be expected that between seasons there are changes that in some cases move away from the original idea to give way to events that are considered more important based on the subplots that this generates, in the case of the second season of FROM this is not so, the plot keeps magnifying the things we saw before.

What is this second season about?

Continuing with the past events, a passenger bus arrives in this strange town and with it new problems and new secrets, the inhabitants try to integrate them into their limited society, the conflict arises when the creatures of the night begin to attack the town and one of these passengers seems to have the solution to combat them and get out of that place alive.

It is exciting when what we see follows the continuity of the above, all this promises to have even more action with new subplots and the relentless horror that characterizes it, as a new work and a new platform this is already shaping up to be one of the most important works of the anus.

What happens here with this story is that its structure as such allows it to develop little by little, its script does not reveal much that it is part of the terrifying charm it has and how the subplots of each one are given and interwoven Of the characters, in a matter of the genre that the series manages and occupies, it presents things of quality rather than quantity, as viewers we would expect that the protagonists were these nocturnal creatures and it is not like that, they are all those who are involved.

We can say that the start of this second season has arrived without delay and right on time, the significant change that it had to go from the Epix platform to MGM+ not only fulfilled the mission of premiering on time and in a proper way but also preserved the team that worked before on this project, it is appreciated that the actors remain the same and that now with new characters the story develops new events and conflicts.

One of the points that have been discussed and about which we already know more is where they are, apparently the direction they are going to take now will be that they are in limbo between our current world and another reality, it is a fact that having ideas about multiverses It is very difficult to carry out, this being one more case, but worked from another perspective.

The first season wasted no time with transitional episodes, we were asked from the beginning what things were like in this strange town and culminating in a ruthless destruction of the hope of its characters, just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse. a bus with passengers to change everything, the second season begins by revisiting the facts further concretizing the mysteries, the drama, and its unrelenting horror, the creator of the series John Griffin and the executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Jack Bender do not give the story a moment of respite in the face of the constant danger that lies in wait for them.

The newcomers, played by Nathan D. Simmons, Kaelen Ohm, Angela Moore, AJ Simmons, and Deborah Grover, re-establish a new dynamic in the group, each maintaining a naive stance to what they are experiencing, each hiding their secrets. that has been revealed to us throughout these 5 episodes, amid these monstrous threats the plot expands more into supernatural mysteries; there is much more out there than just carnivorous creatures, there is a greater and deeper horror than we can imagine or deduce as spectators. The startling encounters raise new questions while presenting a fascinating supernatural parallel to its reveal at the end of last season.

Time is of the essence here and now more than ever the series finds new creative ways to elicit chills and thrills as it presents new obstacles in the survival of its characters making it more intense and relentless with a very good dose of horror, the focus that he now gives to his characters can be very relative in the way in which these survivors try to solve new problems, for example, where they will live and what will happen to food, the fact of not being able to go out greatly limits this last resort since they only have The little that they have been able to store and collect or cultivate, they are prisoners of their own lives.

We can notice that unlike the first season now the nocturnal creatures look wilder, more dangerous, and more terrifying we can see mysterious ghost children, and creepy old women with their particular style of killing but along with this we can also see that they are part of a society with a leader, its origin has not yet been fully revealed to us but we know that it is something supernatural that either comes from another dimension or has been part of our reality for a long time, that they play well and believably about this within its context with us as spectators it is a great success because it keeps us interested in knowing what is going to happen.

The 5 episodes available are:

1. Strangers in a Strange Land.

With the Sheriff gone, Donna and Kenny struggle to manage the chaos when a passenger bus pulls into town, Victor and Tabitha embark on a hair-raising journey through the maze of tunnels beneath the town.

The episode opens with this conflict and we can meet the new characters who, although they have not been fully defined, we can see the horror of not knowing where they are or what they are facing, the lowest point is in the fact of resorting to flashbacks, not of them but of the characters we already know and this hinders their narrative and takes us out of the tension at times.

2. The Kindness of Strangers.

A tense night at the diner as residents and newcomers wait for dawn as Jim and Tom struggle to keep quiet from a panicked bus passenger who may put them all in danger.

This episode sets the starting point for what we are going to see for the rest of the season, we get to know more about its new characters and the nocturnal creatures that appear, making this a massacre. Due to its narrative structure, going from one shot to another during the action is a bug that can be solved but that still needs to be refined because either we see one thing or we see another, the fact of jumping from one scene to another breaks the rhythm but takes us by surprise when we return to the point of action.

3. Tether.

Kenny and Ellis make a shocking discovery in the woods that gives them the key to a major event that will change everything as Boyd wrestles with what’s happening to him.

This episode is very important above all that we have seen before, the revelation of what Kenny and Ellis discover is what gives the key to knowing what they are facing and especially where they are, the tension is increasing and each event is a key piece in everything else, a very well structured episode that manages to stun the horror of the series very well.

4. This Way Gone.

As Boyd’s condition grows more alarming, Sara’s return to the city puts him in a difficult position, Jim shares a troubling new theory about the city.

Here we are already revealed more about how they can be in a vortex between 2 dimensions, the reality in which we live and a very terrifying one, a good episode but with a big flaw, they go 4 and Boyd’s drama becomes more tedious, It seems that the writer and creator John Griffin does not know what to do with this character who is the main one in the series, as simple as putting him in a situation where he leaves his fears behind and faces a reality that is more cruel and terrifying. whatever is the one who is living.

5. Lullaby.

Sara must face her classmates as news of her return spreads through the town. Victor and Jade make an unlikely deal as they try to help.

We are in the middle of this second season and things are still tense for everyone, the solution proposed to the problem of how to get out of there is very little thought out and is risky that will cost several lives and put everyone in danger, as an episode it is good but fragile in its development, it raises more the drama of what each one is experiencing than proposing a solution to the conflicts, we can say that this is a transitional chapter where everything important is left for the end.

These five episodes of the second season do not disappoint in the message they want to give us, let’s not expect everything to be resolved in a short time, even so, and with its accelerated pace, the bet that things will get even better or worse depending on the Viewpoints are impossibly tall, its enigmatic horrors and an immensely talented cast exploring the murky gray areas of their humanity and morality make it one of the most exciting horror series in recent years.

It must be recognized that one of the most important points that this series has to be what it is is based on the fact that nothing is what it seems, the strength of its script and the direction in each episode is very different from what we are accustomed to seeing, it continues along that line of being modest and with a limited budget that is well used, in terms of special effects not much is needed to create that terrifying atmosphere, which together with the music form an entire audiovisual experience emulating or paying homage to works done by John Carpenter or Wees Craven, it is appreciated that here there is not so much humor that breaks with the tension, it is not a series that enjoys that comfort zone.

Nor does he take very lightly the fact of presenting his horror in deaths as it should be, this could well have censorship but he knows very well to play with the factor that it is a series for adults and the fact that it is forming and raising his universe within a genre that is more than spent is to be taken into account.

The cast is made up of Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Shaun Majumder, Scott McCord, Ricky He, Chloe Van Landschoot, Pegah Ghafoori, Corteon Moore, Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster, Avery Konrad, Paul Zinno, Elizabeth Moy, Deborah Grover, Angela Moore, Kaelen Ohm, A.J. Simmons and Nathan D. Simmons who each time specify and better develop their characters.

The music is once again composed by Chris Tilton who takes what has already been done and gives it an even more terrifying twist, pieces that are one more character in this complicated story.

In conclusion, FROM continues to be a project that does not disappoint and that meets the expectations we have as viewers beyond, it does not boast or boast of being a great production but unlike many others, it is its story that is very well done and that He poses things in a very different way, we will see if this allows for more seasons and they conclude everything in a dignified way and at the level of what he has presented.

Season 2 is now available on the MGM+ platform
