Prime Video just dropped the first official teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2099, and it looks every bit as breathtaking and moodily atmospheric as you’d hope. Executive produced by Ridley Scott himself, the eight-episode limited series lands on Prime Video on November 25.

A Wild Dynamic Shift: Yeoh and Schafer Take the Lead

We knew Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer were headlining this project, but the character details revealed alongside the footage flipped the script.

Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been rebuilt—except this time, humans aren’t the ones in control.

• Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a veteran Replicant Blade Runner who is nearing the end of her life cycle. That is a fascinating flip on the traditional lore. Instead of a human hunting down synthetics, we have a Replicant running down her own kind while her internal clock ticks away.

• Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive hiding in L.A. who takes on a wild identity cover: a human pretending to be a Replicant just to survive.

When their paths collide, they’re forced into an uneasy partnership to track down a rogue fugitive holding a secret that could trigger the absolute collapse of the city.

Think about how wild that is for a second. In 1982, Deckard was testing people to see if they had empathy. In 2099, humans are mimicking synthetics just to stay alive.

Can It Live Up to the Legacy?

Look, following in the footsteps of Ridley Scott’s original masterpiece and Denis Villeneuve’s visual triumph (2049) is no easy task. Fans were rightfully skeptical when a television series was first announced. But between showrunner Silka Luisa (Shining Girls), director Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun), and this cast, the creative DNA behind the camera is top-tier.

The teaser leans heavily into moody, film-noir visuals: rain slicking urban pavement, massive retro-futuristic architecture, and sharp practical sets mixed with striking VFX.
