The Exit 8, the psychological horror thriller based on the eerie viral game of the same name, has released its official trailer—and it’s as unsettling as fans hoped.

Directed by Genki Kawamura and starring Kazunari Ninomiya, the film adapts the 2023 walking-simulator game that captivated gamers with its minimalist but terrifying looping subway setting. The story follows a lone man trapped in a seemingly endless corridor, where missing a single strange anomaly resets his progress.

The trailer captures the game’s hypnotic tension, with sterile lighting, subtle visual cues, and an overwhelming sense of isolation. True to the source material, The Exit 8 doesn’t rely on jump scares—instead, it delivers dread through repetition, atmosphere, and psychological unraveling.

The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Midnight Screenings section, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation. Critics praised the adaptation for expanding the game’s concept into a haunting character study without sacrificing its minimalist roots.

Produced by Toho Studios, The Exit 8 is set for theatrical release in Japan on August 29, 2025, with international rollouts following in September and October. Horror fans and lovers of experimental cinema alike are keeping a close eye on this one.

With its surreal visuals, slow-building tension, and existential horror, The Exit 8 could be one of 2025’s most original genre films.
