New Batman-Spawn crossover was announced today by DC Comics
DC’s Jim Lee & Friends panel on Friday afternoon, McFarlane revealed that he’s teaming up with Greg Capullo for a new Batman/Spawn one-shot this December. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Batman and Spawn will meet again
The 48-page special issue – to be titled, simply, Batman/Spawn – will be the first time the two characters have met since 1994’s Batman/Spawn: War Devil one-shot, which will be reprinted ahead of the new book’s release. That earlier title, written by the team of Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and the recently departed Alan Grant with art by Klaus Janson, was DC’s half of a crossover publishing event that year, alongside Frank Miller and McFarlane’s Spawn/Batman, released by Image.
Both Capullo and McFarlane have a history with the two heroes at the center of events; Capullo, famously, partnered with Scott Snyder for a hugely successful Batman run beginning in 2011 with the relaunch of the main Batman title and had earlier been one of the primary artists on the Spawn title throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. McFarlane, of course, created Spawn in 1992 and has been responsible for the character ever since, but had also enjoyed a brief run on Detective Comics in the mid-’80s, completing the ‘Batman: Year Two’ storyline with writer Mike W. Barr after the departure of original artist Alan Davis.
Details about the new Batman/Spawn haven’t been officially revealed yet, but Capullo shared two covers for the issue at the show: one featuring Batman standing victorious over Spawn, and another featuring the two heroes with roles reversed. The covers have not been shared with the public yet.
Batman/Spawn: War Devil will be re-released on November 15, with the all-new Batman/Spawn #1 by McFarlane and Capullo set for a December 13 release.
