Marvel Celebrates 50 Years of Wolverine
Wolverine turns 50 in 2024 — and to mark the occasion, Marvel has enlisted a murderers’ row of artists for a series of homage variant covers starring the claw-wielding X-Man.
Marvel Comics has announced the “Wolverine Wolverine Wolverine” variant cover series. No fewer than 22 of these variants will adorn various Marvel titles throughout the month of January 2024. At this time, the publisher has revealed the first 15 of them — which pay tribute to the iconic cover art from such classic issues as Spider-Man #1 (1990), Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8, Amazing Spider-Man #39 (1966), Fantastic Four #1 (1961), X-Men #1 (1963), Amazing Spider-Man #50 (1967), Infinity Gauntlet #1 (1991), Amazing Spider-Man #300, and more.
Wolverine’s 50th anniversary celebration
Of course, Marvel has even more in store for Wolverine’s 50th anniversary. Just last month, the publisher announced Wolverine: Madripoor Knights — a celebratory five-issue limited series by Chris Claremont and Edgar Salazar. Set to launch on February 7, 2024, Madripoor Knights acts as a direct sequel to Claremont and Jim Lee’s beloved one-shot story from 1990’s Uncanny X-Men #268.
Created by Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and John Romita Sr., Wolverine made his first full appearance in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #181. The character has gone on to become a pop culture icon. Actor Hugh Jackman famously portrayed Wolverine in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film franchise from 2000 to 2017. Jackman will soon reprise the role in the upcoming Marvel Studios production Deadpool 3.
