Michelangelo Returns in The Last Ronin — Training Day Prequel Comic
The Roninverse expands once more this July with The Last Ronin — Training Day, a new one-shot comic that marks Michelangelo’s return to the gritty world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the first time since 2023’s The Lost Years.
Co-created by TMNT legends Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, the story unfolds over a single, high-stakes day in the life of Mikey and Casey Marie Jones. Set between the events of The Lost Years and the upcoming Last Ronin Part 3, the comic explores the emotional and philosophical evolution of Mikey as he embraces his role as a mentor and protector.
“He could see the spark and he could see the light and he could see the beauty in what Casey Marie Jones felt and wanted to believe in,” Eastman told Entertainment Weekly. “He wanted to lean into Splinter’s journal of what he trained and what he learned from that, and directing towards this protector of the city thing, which the Turtles originally grew into”.
The creative team promises a deep dive into the legacy of the Turtles, the burden of survival, and the hope that drives a new generation forward. With the live-action Last Ronin movie currently shelved, this comic offers fans a much-needed return to the dark, emotionally charged world that redefined the TMNT mythos.
The Last Ronin — Training Day will be available from IDW Publishing in July 2026.
