Godzilla Gets Scary Again in IDW’s 1954-Set Horror Comic
IDW Publishing is set to terrify kaiju fans this May with the launch of The Horror of Godzilla, a bold new comic series that reimagines the King of the Monsters through a chilling horror lens.
Written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, with art by Tristan Jones, the series is set in 1954—the same year the original Godzilla film debuted—and promises a grounded, nightmarish take on the monster’s first appearance. Editor Jake Williams describes the book as “a terrifying look at the Kai-Sei era’s first Godzilla attack,” drawing comparisons to acclaimed entries like Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and the 1954 classic.

“This is the first Godzilla comic we’ve released that goes 100% in on horror,” Williams said. “It very well might become the best Godzilla comic ever made… it’s certainly the scariest.”
Jones’ artwork is expected to deliver a visceral, dread-soaked atmosphere, placing readers “on the ground in the middle of the most petrifying night in human history.” With its period setting and psychological intensity, The Horror of Godzilla aims to redefine how fans experience the kaiju mythos—less city-stomping spectacle, more existential terror.
The series launches in comic shops and digital platforms in May 2024.
