Fans of the cult-classic 1997 sci-fi horror film Event Horizon have something new to look forward to. IDW Publishing has officially announced Event Horizon: Dark Descent, a five-issue comic book prequel slated to launch on August 20, 2025.

The series will explore the haunting events leading up to the original movie, delving into the fate of the ill-fated ship’s first crew. Written by Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness), with art by Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance) and colors by Pip Martin (That Texas Blood), the series promises a deep dive into the psychological and cosmic terror that defined the film.

“Event Horizon is a touchstone of sci-fi horror, and we’re thrilled to explore the unknown horrors that came before the film,” said Ward in the official press release. “We’re going full tilt into the disturbing and mind-warping horror fans expect from this universe.”

Set decades before the film’s events in 2047, Dark Descent focuses on Captain Kilpack and the original crew of the Event Horizon as they test the experimental gravity drive—unleashing a descent into madness and otherworldly terror.

The debut issue will feature a main cover by acclaimed artist Jeffrey Alan Love, with variant covers by Christian Ward, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson. Special editions will include a foil variant of Ward’s cover and a blank sketch cover for collectors.

Event Horizon: Dark Descent is part of IDW’s newly launched horror-focused imprint, IDW Dark, which aims to expand and adapt iconic horror franchises from Paramount Global. Upcoming titles under the banner also include adaptations of A Quiet Place, Smile, Sleepy Hollow, and The Twilight Zone.

Pre-orders for Issue #1 close on July 14, 2025.
