DC announces a new Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special with original creative teams

DC Comics is expanding on the classic Death of Superman event with new heartbreaking stories showing the fallout of the Man of Steel’s demise. The 30th anniversary celebration is coming November 8, with a comprehensive first look here.

The classic Death of Superman arc from DC Comics is getting all-new stories on the event’s 30th anniversary, as the original creative teams are returning to showcase different perspectives on the Man of Steel’s demise. DC Comics announced four new stories that will appear in a new 80-page one-shot, The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1, that will show how the DC Universe was impacted by the fall of its greatest hero.

In 1992, DC Comics launched the infamous The Death of Superman crossover event, featuring Kal-El’s death against the villain Doomsday, with several potential replacements rising in his absence. The comic made international headlines for killing Superman, while over six million copies of the first issue were sold. While some view the event as a publicity stunt, The Death of Superman has remained a somewhat iconic chapter in the Man of Steel’s history, with the storyline being adapted in animated films, video games, and other expanded media. Now, DC Comics fans are about to learn what happened to some key characters during the fall of Superman.

The four stories include “The Life of Superman” by Jurgens, Breeding, Brad Anderson, and John Workman, which will feature Jon Kent learning about the death of his dad years earlier as they take on a new villain named Doombreaker. “Standing Guard” by Stern, Guice, Glenn Whitmore, and Rob Leigh will show the Superman and Doomsday battle from the Guardians’ perspective. “Time” from Simonson, Bogdanove, Whitmore, and Leigh will focus on the death of Superman from Steel’s perspective. Lastly, “Above and Beyond” by Ordway, Grummett, Doug Hazelwood, Whitmore, and Leigh will focus on Ma and Pa Kent watching the Superman/Doomsday showdown on television.
