Director Yasuomi Umetsu Returns with “Virgin Punk” a young bounty hunter in dystopian world.

In a highly anticipated collaboration, renowned director Yasuomi Umetsu and esteemed animation studio Shaft have announced the release of their original anime film series, “Virgin Punk.” The inaugural installment, titled “Clockwork Girl,” is scheduled to premiere on June 27, 2025, at Cine Libre Ikebukuro in Tokyo and Theatre Umeda in Osaka.

“Virgin Punk” delves into the tumultuous life of Ubu, a young bounty hunter navigating a futuristic, dystopian world. The narrative explores her personal struggles amidst the desires and chaos of the formidable characters she encounters.

Yasuomi Umetsu, acclaimed for his work on “Kite” and “Mezzo Forte,” serves as both director and character designer for the series. The project marks his return to directing after a decade-long hiatus. Studio Shaft, known for acclaimed works like “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” and the “Monogatari” series, is handling the animation production.

The creative team also includes series composer and scriptwriter Yuya Takahashi, recognized for his work on “Lupin III: Part IV” and “Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible.” Main animators Genichiro Abe, Shinya Takahashi, and Maho Kando contribute their expertise to the project.

“Virgin Punk” has been in development since late 2014, following the conclusion of Umetsu’s previous work with studio Arms. The project was officially announced in September 2024 at Aniplex Online Fest, generating significant excitement among anime enthusiasts.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the film’s release, anticipating a compelling blend of action and storytelling that reflects the distinctive styles of both Umetsu and Shaft.
