Three New Gundam Anime Projects announced for 2022

Three Mobile Suit Gundam anime projects have been announced for 2022, including a new series, a new movie, and a special edition of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.

The new Gundam series is titled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, while the new movie is titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island. Cucuruz Doan’s Island is the name of the 15th episode of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the character designer and animation director of the original series, will direct the movie.

Meanwhile, the special edition of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, which will be released in nine parts, is related to the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Urdr Hunt spin-off, which will release in 2022 via the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans G smartphone app. A trailer for Urdr Hunt was released in 2019, while a short trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans G was released today.

The special edition’s broadcast will coincide with Urdr Hunt‘s release period and will offer a look at the spin-off. Urdr Hunt features the involvement of the series’ staff, including director Tatsuyuki Nagai, scriptwriter Hajime Kamoshida (now series composer), original character designer Yū Itō, character designer Michinori Chiba, music composer Masaru Yokoyama, and background art studio Kusanagi, as well as mechanical designers Naohiro Washio, Kanetake EbikawaIppei Gyōbu, and Kenji Teraoka.

These new announcements are in addition to all of the new Gundam projects Bandai announced earlier in the year: Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway producer Naohiro Ogata recently revealed the first details about that movie’s upcoming sequel, including its title and the return of one of the series’ most famous heroes, Bright Noa. The next Gunpla-focused anime series, Gundam Breaker Battlogue, will make its debut in Japan this October. The series will also be simulcast on the official Gundam Youtube channel.
