A new animated adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, the 2004 light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe, has been announced. The upcoming anime will offer a fresh take on the beloved sci-fi story that served as the basis for Doug Liman’s 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow.

The adaptation will be helmed by Kenichiro Akimoto, who previously worked as CG director on Ayumu Watanabe’s Children of the Sea and the Berserk: The Golden Age Arc film trilogy. While details remain scarce, early reports indicate that the new project will diverge from both the original novel and Liman’s live-action adaptation, offering a unique perspective on the time-looping war story.

Originally published in 2004, All You Need Is Kill follows Keiji Kiriya, a soldier caught in a time loop as humanity battles an alien species known as the Mimics. The novel’s gripping action and psychological depth led to its Hollywood adaptation, Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The story also received a manga adaptation illustrated by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata.

With Akimoto at the helm, fans are eager to see how this new animated adaptation will reimagine the high-stakes, time-loop-driven narrative. Further details, including the animation studio and release date, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
