Watch Maya and the Three trailer, Jorge Gutiérrez film
Maya, which draws from Aztec, Inca, and Maya mythology, is a nine-part Netflix series, but Gutiérrez (The Book of Life) has called it a “giant movie broken up in chunks.” The trailer leaps right into the story, introducing the Three, a trio of outcasts who join Maya on her quest to defeat the dark lords of the underworld.
Maya, the Eagle Warrior, is voiced by Zoe Saldana, who is joined by a fantastic cast. Her comrades are Stephanie Beatriz as Chimi, the Skull Warrior; Allen Maldonaldo as Rico, the Rooster Wizard; and Gabriel Iglesias as Picchu, the Puma Barbarian, who seems to feel his muscles are all the introduction he needs. Together, the four of them must stop Lord Mictlan (Alfred Molina), to whom Maya’s life is forfeit thanks to the secrets of her family’s past.
Maya also stars Diego Luna as Zatz, the Prince of Bats; Gael García Bernal as the Jaguar Triplets; Danny Trejo as the God of Earthquakes; Cheech Marin as the Gods of Wind and Storm; Rosie Perez as the Goddess of Gators; Queen Latifah as Gran Bruja; and Wyclef Jean as Gran Brujo.
The lush, vibrant, immersive imagery in this trailer (pause and look at the detail on Chimi’s character design; it is stunning) combined with that all-star cast makes Maya look like a winner—and a story not about one girl proving herself and saving the world, but about a group of folks using their varied talents to succeed at their quest. (And there’s some welcome humor and lightness, too.)
Maya and the Three begin October 22nd on Netflix.
